About the event

Presenters: Cemre “Gem” Korman, LCSW-R (she/her) and Asha Gozzelin, LMSW (ze/zir). Both therapists are affiliates of Tree of Hope counseling and provide gender affirming care.

Teaching Methods: Slides, lecture, handouts, group activity and case studies. Participants will receive the slides and sample letters.

Part 1 - Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn gender related terms/definitions, history and how to diagnose Gender Dysphoria.
  • Participants will learn more about gender affirming treatment and learn to write effective letters for Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy and surgeries.
  • Participants will learn how to best support transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming patients and their families.

Part 1 - Agenda:

  • 9 – 9:15 Introductions, “housekeeping” & reflections
  • 9:15 – 10:15 History, terminology & pronouns
  • 10:15 – 10:30 Genderbread Person & activity
  • 10:30 – 10:40 Break
  • 10:40 – 11:15 Diagnostic history, diagnosis, gender affirming treatment
  • 11:15 – 12:00 Letter writing
  • 12:00 - 12:30 Q&A and evaluations

Part 2 - Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will further their clinical evaluation skills when working with transgender or gender diverse individuals.
  • Participants will learn about the WPATH standards of gender affirming care to develop further understanding of gender diverse populations and treatment recommendations.
  • Participants will apply the DSM-5-TR and WPATH standards of care for assessment using case examples.
  • Participants will apply the DSM-5-TR and WPATH standards of care for treatment recommendations and evaluation using case examples.
  • Participants will increase their understanding of intersecting identities in gender affirming therapy.

Part 2 - Agenda:

  • 1:30 - 1:45 Introductions & "housekeeping"
  • 1:45 -2:30 Further into the clinical evaluation process, DSM-5-TR & assessing for Gender Dysphoria in youth, adolescents and adults
  • 2:30 - 3:00 Gender Diversity, Intersex and Intersecting Identities
  • 3:00 - 3:10 Break
  • 3:10 - 4:00 WPATH standards of care & Gender Affirming Treatment/ Interventions
  • 4:00 to 4:45 Case Studies
  • 4:45 - 5 pm Q&A and evaluations

CEUs: Each part of this workshop was approved for 3.5 Social Work and LMHC* CEUs for each part. 7 CEUs total for completing part 1 and 2.

(Tree of Hope Counseling, LCSW, PLLC, is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0322. *For LMHCs, Tree of Hope has partnered with 716CEU and this training has been approved for CEUs by the LMHC board.)
